Brighton's Champions League dream looks weirdly real right now

Nobody saw this coming. Brighton lost three of their best players over the summer — Baleba to Man United for £70m, van Hecke to Spurs for £52m, Danny Welbeck to Chelsea — and shipped out 20 players total. On paper, this was supposed to be a rebuild year, maybe even a step backward.

Five games in? They're the Premier League's top scorers with 16 goals. Their goal difference sits at +11, best in the league. And they just demolished Arsenal 3-0. Yeah, the actual defending champions.

So what's going on here. Well, they've done it without Welbeck (their 13-goal man from last season), they're missing key players to injury, and their standout performer is a 35-year-old they grabbed in January for £1.7m. Not exactly a dream squad on paper.

The thing is, Brighton's always been about finding value and building momentum. Last season they finished eighth and grabbed Conference League football. Losing that many players could've been a disaster. Instead, they've looked sharp, clinical, and genuinely dangerous going forward.

Whether they can actually push for the Champions League spots is another question. Four teams ahead of them is a lot of ground to make up over 38 games. But right now, they're playing like a side that believes it can compete with anyone, which is more than you could say two months ago.
