Chelsea just broke the British transfer record for Morgan Rogers

Morgan Rogers is officially Chelsea's new left winger, and they paid a lot for the privilege. The £117m fee makes him the most expensive British player in history — a record that lasted about three weeks, considering Manchester City dropped £116m on Elliot Anderson not long ago.

So what's the catch? Rogers, 23, spent last season tearing it up for Aston Villa. Fourth-place finish in the league, Europa League winners, and the guy was a major part of both runs. England came calling too, which meant half the Premier League suddenly developed an interest in his availability.

Arsenal seemed like the obvious next step. They're the champions, they needed someone on the left flank, and they sent basically everyone to try and convince him — Ødegaard, Arteta, a bunch of their England lads. Thing is, Arsenal wouldn't pay what Villa wanted. So Chelsea stepped in, threw the money around, and got their man.

Here's where it gets interesting though. Rogers plays best when he's got room to run. He loves space, loves galloping forward into gaps where defenders have already committed. Xabi Alonso, Chelsea's new manager, doesn't really work that way. His teams build attacks methodically, patiently, moving the ball sideways and backwards before finding the killer pass. It's a totally different rhythm.

So yeah, Rogers is talented. Yeah, he's proven he can perform at a high level. But whether he slots into Alonso's system without friction? That's the real question Chelsea just paid £117m to answer.
