How Trump's redistricting push turned blue Virginia districts red

Republicans didn't waste a second. Within weeks of a Supreme Court decision that gutted key voting rights protections, GOP-controlled states started redrawing district lines. And Democrats are already feeling it.

Virginia fell first. A court threw out the state's Democratic-drawn maps, handing Republican mapmakers another shot at carving up the state. Safer seats for Republicans. Tougher terrain for Democrats heading into the midterms.

But Virginia isn't alone. Four states total are now moving forward with redistricting efforts, all riding the wave of a Supreme Court ruling that weakened protections for minority voters. Trump's team has been quietly cheerleading these moves, seeing them as a way to stack the electoral deck before 2026.

The timing isn't accidental. Redistricting battles usually drag on for years, buried in litigation. This one's moving fast, probably because both sides know exactly what's at stake. For Democrats, it's a genuine problem. They'd built real advantages in certain states through previous maps. Now those are getting ripped up.

What makes this particularly strange is how the Court's decision cleared the path for all of it. By narrowing voting rights enforcement, the justices gave states considerably more room to redraw districts however they liked. Republicans had been waiting for precisely this kind of opening (and now they've got it).

Virginia Democrats had controlled the redistricting process before. They drew maps that helped them hold seats. That's done now. The court's move means they don't get to defend what they'd built.

This is probably just the start. Other states with Republican legislatures are watching closely, wondering if they can push through their own maps before 2026. The midterms are shaping up to be decided, at least partly, by who's holding the pencil right now.
